“Measuring sea surface shows potential tsunami. Possible damage along the coast near the epicenter of the earthquake and can also be a threat to the surrounding islands,” said an official Pacific Tsunami Warning Center as reported by Reuter’s news agency on Wednesday (30/9/2009).

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for the island of New Zealand, American Samoa and the sea of other small islands around it. The earthquake occurred about 190 KM southwest of the island of American Samoa and struck at a depth of 18 KM under the sea surface.

In Western Samoa, some residents have felt a big jolt and recommended by the local police to move to higher ground. One officer said the quake was felt for more than five minutes. Waves as high tide occurs at 1:57 meters at Pago-Pago Sea where the waves have exceeded the normal limit of wave height
